TurnKey~Volunteer Opportunities

Mark your calendars
& save the dates!

I wanted to share with all of you the upcoming volunteer
opportunities at the Museum.

SATURDAYS! We need help on Saturdays. The same two ladies have been volunteering nearly every Saturday for at least the last two years. Our Saturdays are only 3 hours, 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. We need two people in the Museum to open to the public; three people are even better so if one person is giving a tour then two are manning the office and phone. You can give a tour if you’d like, filing, indexing, data entry, light housekeeping tasks…we’ll train you!

Contact Kaye at henrycountyhistoricalsociety@gmail.com or mandora.cmt@gmail.com or (765) 400-6931.

HOLIDAY HELP! After Thanksgiving, we’ll need help decorating the Museum and at our holiday events. Decorating includes setting up a live Christmas tree in the front parlor and decorating it, as well as the main floor of the Museum and the entryway. If anyone is willing to put up outside decorations, that would be a bonus! Going up and down stairs and climbing up a ladder are also bonuses!

Saturday, December 8, 4-8 p.m. We are scheduled to be on the ICAP Candlelight Tour. We just need to be in the Museum to show guests the main floor. ICAP volunteers should also be on hand so if you wanted to get a look at what volunteering is like when there is a crowd but there are other volunteers, this would be a great time!

Sunday, December 9, 1-4 p.m. This is our Christmas Tea Open House. We will be open to the public that day with entertainment and refreshments. Tasks will include setting out and replenishing refreshments, setting up chairs, greeting visitors, clean up. Fun fact: You’ll get to hear Christmas carols played on the Jesse French baby grand piano!

MUSEUM AFTER HOURS! If I am to continue this once-monthly program next year, I will need a dedicated volunteer to help with set up and tear down. It is the second Thursday of each month, doors open at 6:30 p.m., program begins at 7 p.m., we try to be done and out by 8 p.m. I set up chairs, the large screen, and projector and set out light refreshments. The last one for 2018 will be Thursday, December 13!

SPECIAL PROGRAM! On Monday, December 17, a group called Just Us will be holding their graduation in the Museum. This is a small group of women who have held their program here before so they know the drill. We only need to be present and set up chairs; they bring refreshments. This is in the early evening.

2019!

JANUARY AND FEBRUARY…We are closed to the public for taking down the present exhibit and installing the new one. Also, deep cleaning of all areas. Great time to get to “know” the Museum!

HEIRLOOM GARDEN…This is something I’d like to begin as a tie-in with our 2019 exhibit, Farming in Henry County: People to Plows. I’d like to gear it toward children and partner with the New Castle-Henry County Public Library and their Shared Harvest seed lending library program. I am writing for a Youth Garden Grant that might help us obtain some needed gardening implements; the grant is due December 17. I’d like to know who would be interested in helping with this program. If you’ve been to the Annex through the back door, you’ve probably seen the flower bed just off the porch (it’s about 8′ in length and 3′ in width). I’d like to use that as our “garden patch” and plant heirloom seeds. We’d start in March/April and go through October/November. I’d like to set aside one Saturday during those months when the kids and their parent/guardian could come up and “tend” their area of the garden so they could see the progress as the seeds grew. Of course, we would be tending to it the rest of the time. We could harvest our veggies and then donate seeds back to the library. Any takers? Click here to get more information about the grant. Let me know ASAP if you’d like to be an Heirloom Patch team member!

MUSEUM BOOT CAMP! That’s right…we’re having one at the Museum hosted by the Indiana Historical Society! Monday, March 18, 2019, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. We set up tables, chairs, and the large screen, and they bring the program and lunch. 🙂

HCHS ANNUAL MEETING! This is scheduled for Sunday, April 28, 2019…time TBD. The program will feature an archaeologist from BSU to talk to us about their findings from the new dig they are about to begin. We set up chairs and have refreshments, along with the program.

We have a saying here: “The more, the merrier.” We borrowed it, but it rings true! Come help us show off Henry County history!

There is a reason why the Henry County Historical Society is the oldest, continuously operating organization of its kind in the state of Indiana…people like YOU! If the historical society and Museum had run out of volunteers long ago, the artifacts we care for now would have found another home. Would that home be in Henry County, Indiana? Maybe not. Because of folks like us, though, these treasures remain where they belong and we are able to share them with others in their rightful setting.

Consider coming up to help out, either during an event or just a regular day (particularly Saturdays!). You are always welcome, and we appreciate you sharing your talents for the benefit of the Museum!
